I guess outputting frames to video that is slowly being rendered one by one is prone to encoding problems or encoder might be occupied with some other task at the same time. My Xvid MPG codec that used to work once does create garbled, green or skewed video from time to time. I sometimes render animations to AVI format for preview purposes with low quality settings. There is still a chance that you may have videos with artifacts from time to time, although you may have had it working once.
This way you'll have more options but still you'll have to try which fits your job best. You can install free codecs like K-lite Codec Pack or alike.
Final image will be either very large in size or may have artifacts like in your case. Without codecs installed, Windows presents you with a very few and mostly useless codecs. If you really have to, you may need to change the codec with the Setup button on the File Output format selection dialog.
We don't prefer rendering to movies directly from 3ds Max, although it is an option.
